The intriguing story of a 1731 Stradivarius violin once owned by Israeli Philharmonic founder Bronislaw Huberman and its tale of survival. Stolen in 1936 while Huberman played Carnegie Hall, it remained “lost” for nearly 50 years but was rediscovered in 1985 covered with shoe polish. Meticulously restored, it was eventually put up for sale as a museum piece. Disturbed that such an instrument would remain silent, American virtuoso Joshua Bell purchased the Huberman Stradivarius and now plays it during his concerts.
