In
this compelling coming-of-age story set on a kibbutz
in the 1970s, director Dror Shaul, who was born and
raised on a kibbutz in the Negev, peels away layers
of folklore and romanticism to reveal the harshness
of the communal enterprise. It is 12-year-old Dvir’s
bar mitzvah year, and he and his classmates must
perform a series of tasks to prove their ability to
live up to the social standards of the kibbutz. But
Dvir also has a mentally ill mother whom he loves
above all else. Trying to reconcile the rigid rules
of the kibbutz with the stinging realization that it
has abandoned his mother leads Dvir to make a
chilling decision that changes his life forever.
