Southern U.S.A. Premiere
Israel, 2002; Anat Zuria, director
Hebrew w/ English subtitles; 63 minutes
Drawing on her own experiences and her friends, the
filmmaker shows how contemporary women are affected
by ancient family purity laws—especially that of
niddah, the 10-to-12 day period when women are
forbidden to even touch their husbands. In exploring
this complicated and controversial subject, the film
presents the hidden struggle of religious women to
maintain their cultural traditions and to fulfill
their own individual needs within the framework of
strict, masculine, religious law.
Invited: Anat Zuria, director.
