In 1981, during the early waves of Israeli
settlements in West Bank, a lonely 42-year old widow
with two teenage daughters, tries desperately to
join a new settler group for a sense of community.
But that involves meeting the group’s religious and
ideological stands and when an emotionally damaging
scandal hits home, Rachel’s family fails the test.
Told from the point of view of the younger daughter,
this is ostensibly a coming-of-age story set in a
unique period of Israel’s history. But
writer-director Joseph Cedar continues his
examination of the sectarian and religious aspects
of Israeli society and the question of where
ultimate loyalty is due, themes explored in his
apocalyptic first feature Time of Favor (2001).
