Winner of six Israeli Oscars, Time of Favor is a taut thriller about Orthodox Zionists that rings prophetically close to the truth. The story follows Menachem, an Orthodox army officer living in a West Bank settlement run by a rabbi who preaches about the need for Jews to rule all of the Holy Land, including the Temple Mount. Menachem, who has been chosen by his military superiors to command an all-Orthodox unit, finds himself torn between his duty and his faith. Complicating matters, he is also in love with the Rabbi's daughter who has been promised to Menachem's best friend. As the love triangle develops, so does a violent scheme to blow up the Temple Mount so the Jews can take it over. Time of Favor is the work of an insider to the culture it portrays. Director Joseph Cedar was raised in an Orthodox home and lived for a year in a West Bank settlement. The film is a compelling study of the motivations behind a movement that is willing to take Israel to the brink.
