JAZZMAN FROM THE GULAG SOUTHEAST U.S.A PREMIERE This fascinating documentary explores the extraordinary life of Eddie Rosner whom Louis Armstrong nicknamed the "White Louis Armstrong." A wandering Jew who moved through the history of Jazz, Europe, and the Soviet Empire, Rosner began as a child prodigy violinist in Berlin, but was drawn to the jazz of African Americans. Once the Nazis took power, he fled east to Russia with Ruth Kaminska, his wife and actress Ida Kaminska's daughter. There, Stalin honored him as a State Musician only to banish him to Siberia after the war because of his Jewishness. Using rare recordings, archival footage, and accounts from contemporaries, this film chronicles the adventures of someone who experienced it all: fame, exile, horror, genius, and poverty but never lost his love of jazz. Guest: Erika Rosner Kovalich, Eddie Rosner's daughter. |
